Milieudefensie (Friends of the Earth Netherlands) is an independent environmental organization that works towards a sustainable and fair Netherlands.
About the initiative
In 2019, together with 17,379 co-claimants and six organizations, Milieudefensie took a case to court aiming to prevent Shell from continuing to create pollution and cause dangerous climate change. The court issued a ruling in 2021 that required Shell to reduce its CO2 emissions by 45% by 2030. Unfortunately, Shell is appealing this decision and Milieudefensie is now preparing for the appeal proceedings. Friends of the Earth promotes:
- Greater awareness of the pollution caused by large companies and their policies
- Mobilizing the public to take action
- A way of exerting pressure to get politics moving

The Shell climate case is unique. It is the first time in history that policy change has been demanded from a company to make it do more to combat further climate change The Fred Foundation is supporting Milieudefensie in the appeal to help ensure that the earlier court’s important judgment is upheld by the higher court.
