Watoto Foundation

Watoto Foundation Tanzania was founded in 2003 and is dedicated to supporting street boys in and around Arusha.

About the initiative

Founded by Nout van Hout, the organisation is now led by former Watoto student Andrea Modest, who was trained as a medical doctor. Boys aged 13 to 15 are first supported in the drop-in centre, after which they enter a four-year school programme that includes vocational training and life skills. A guaranteed traineeship or paid job — for example at their own Kiboko Lodge — is part of the programme.

Over the years, 1,300 boys have graduated from the school programme, resulting in the following outcomes:

That's why we support Watoto

We support Watoto because their work goes far beyond temporary aid. They offer long-term support, education, and guidance to street boys, helping them rediscover their self-worth and build a future. Their approach is respectful, effective, and deeply human.
